About SAMe
Naturally occurring compound involved in numerous biochemical processes, commonly used as a supplement to support mood, liver health, and joint function.

SAMe supports mood by increasing levels of key neurotransmitters (serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine) and improving neuronal membrane function. It may have a fairly rapid antidepressant effect, sometimes noticeable within a week.
Why this rating: Evidence indicates SAMe can be effective for depression, but limitations include small, short-duration studies, inconsistent results, and limited long-term safety data. Multiple controlled trials demonstrate efficacy comparable to established antidepressants. However, the largest and most rigorous trial showed no clear advantage over placebo, and comparisons to standard SSRIs are minimal.
