Why is calcium not rated a 10 when it comes to bone health? Let me explain. We're discussing calcium in regard to supplementation. Not the major mineral.
So why 7? Even though calcium is a major player within the human body, supplementation has very underwhelming results. This is due to two reasons. One, the results are insignificant above the age of 35. And two, because most people get more than enough calcium in their daily diet already.
I was only able to find solid evidence for supplementation in one instance. This was for the age group between 20 and 35. This timeframe is important because it is after major bone mass development but before degradation occurs. The importance of calcium during this time period is that it may prevent osteoporosis from occuring down the line.
Why this rating: Studies are inconclusive for a larger population and there's no long term study to fully validate the findings of the one promising study.
- Muscle Function: 6.0/10 (moderate evidence).
Like bone health, muscle function has a similar story. Calcium plays a crucial role in muscle function within the body. But supplementation shows lackluster results.
Evidence is fairly weak when discussing healthy individuals. Only promising results are present in the case of a calcium deficiency.
Why this rating: While mechanistically essential, supplementation rarely improves muscle function in healthy individuals. Clinical evidence shows benefits mainly in deficiency correction rather than performance enhancement.
- Cramp Relief: 3.0/10 (moderate evidence).
I usually don't rate outcomes with such a low effectiveness score, but I thought this one was relevant. While reviewing user experiences, it's very common to see claims involving cramp relief. So I did some research of my own.
The studies that I found can be summarized by the following statements: "The only placebo-controlled trial of calcium treatment showed no evidence of benefit" and "The evidence that calcium reduces cramp is weak and seems to depend on placebo effect." If you're looking at calcium for exercise-related cramps, you may want to look elsewhere. Cramps related to exercise are more likely due to muscular fatigue. If you're experiencing a calcium deficiency after a singular workout, there's likely something larger at play.
